Accreditation

As of 2009, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) will embark on a process to accredit (public and private) health facilities now enrolled with the NHIA and interested to maintain this enrolment. Also CHAG facilities can request for this accreditation.

This accreditation quality assurance system was initiated and piloted in 2008, when 12 modules (including in total a series of 500 questions) each assessing a specific quality aspect (e.g. clinical care, pharmaceutical supplies, safety, management) were developed.

Having undergone such a quality test, a medical facility is either rated A+, A, B, C or D, depending on the quality level reached, on which basis a different fee structure shall apply in the future. Hereby means score A+ “excellent quality level”, while D means “just sufficient” to be accredited. When scoring lower (E, F) accreditation criteria have not been met. In that case a facility gets 6 months time to work on improvements, before requesting for another survey.

PharmAccess, a Dutch NGO, is assisting the NHIA to roll out this quality program. Besides assisting the NHIA, PharmAccess wants to start providing technical assistance to those (interested) facilities which face difficulties meeting the accreditation criteria. His program is scheduled to start in the coming months. CHAG will inform you in due time which steps to take to request for support.
